an American Cotton screwing song. It was probably picked up and adapted by Irish Sailors working in cotton mills during the
off-season or it was learned from ex slaves turned sailors.

Liverpool was the main jumping
off spot for many Irish immigrants.
*Sligo Stabbing
Two jigs, Trip to Sligo and
Pull the Knife and Stick it in Again. The second tune title refers to the proper way of killing a witch in Irish legend.
The crumbling ruins of Sligo Abbey and the haunted tales associated with it were a major influence on Bram Stoker whose
mother was from the region.

the writings of Thomas Paine.

Frosty Morn
There are many versions of
this. There is an Irish version, a Scottish version and a version played in Appalachia.
According to a couple of sources it was written to commemorate the cold frosty morning of April 16th, 1745,
the battle of Culloden Moor and the defeat of the Jacobites.
* A Whaling Song
The lyrics to this song were found in a log book belonging to Captain Charles Robertson who commanded
whaling expeditions to the Arctic in the middle of the 19th century. The original is 18 verses long and is one of the most
complete and accurate accounts of a whaling voyage given in verse.
